What happens when your WHOOP membership expires

When a WHOOP membership ends the app locks, sync stops and the strap keeps recording. What you lose, what you keep, whether you have to renew every year, and how to keep using the strap without paying again.

The renewal email arrives, you let it go, and one morning the app shows a lock instead of a recovery score. Here is exactly what changes when a WHOOP membership ends, and what you can still do with the strap on your wrist.

What stops

  • The app locks. No new recovery, sleep, strain or journal data. The screens you paid for go grey.
  • Cloud sync stops. The strap stores hours of readings on the device, but nothing is uploaded and nothing is scored.
  • Firmware updates stop. The strap keeps whatever version it has.
  • Coaching, community and the WHOOP Coach chat stop. They live in the app.
  • Blood oxygen and skin temperature stop. Those readings are only ever shown inside the WHOOP app.

What keeps working

  • The strap records. Heart rate and beat to beat intervals, all day and all night, exactly as before.
  • It charges. The battery pack still works.
  • Bluetooth works. The strap advertises over Bluetooth Low Energy and any app that speaks its protocol can pair with it.

That last point is the one WHOOP’s own help pages leave out. The membership pays for WHOOP’s software. It does not switch the sensor off.

Do you have to renew?

Only if you want the WHOOP app. Memberships are 12 or 24 months and renew automatically unless you cancel before the date, so if you do not want to pay again, cancel before the renewal. If you want to keep the strap doing its job, you need another app, not another year.

Keeping the strap alive without WHOOP

Sixteen pairs with a WHOOP 4.0 directly over Bluetooth. It bonds with the strap, keeps reading it in the background, and scores your sleep, recovery, HRV and strain on your phone. No WHOOP account, no cloud, no membership. The setup is five steps and takes one night to produce the first score. The full walkthrough, including what you will not get back, is in how to use WHOOP without a subscription.

What you will not get back: WHOOP’s own scoring, its journal and community, blood oxygen, skin temperature and respiratory rate. If those are the reasons you wore the strap, renew. If the morning recovery number was the reason, you do not have to.

Before the end date

  1. Export your history from the WHOOP app while it still opens.
  2. Note your typical HRV and resting heart rate, so you have a reference for the first week on any new app.
  3. Decide about the strap: WHOOP 4.0 works with Sixteen today. Newer straps use a different protocol and are not supported until we verify them on real hardware.

Questions people ask

What happens when a WHOOP membership expires?
The WHOOP app stops showing new recovery, sleep and strain data, the strap stops syncing to WHOOP's cloud, and firmware updates stop. Your old data stays in the account for a while. The strap itself keeps recording heart rate and beat to beat intervals and keeps charging as normal.
Is WHOOP useless without a membership?
The WHOOP app is. The strap is not. It is a Bluetooth heart rate sensor that keeps working, and a third party app such as Sixteen can pair with it and score sleep, recovery and strain on your phone with no WHOOP account.
Do I need to renew my WHOOP every year?
To keep using the WHOOP app, yes. WHOOP sells 12 and 24 month memberships that renew automatically unless you cancel before the renewal date. To keep using the strap you do not: pair it with an app that reads it directly.
How long does WHOOP keep my data after the membership ends?
WHOOP's help centre says the account goes dormant rather than being deleted straight away, and that rejoining restores it. Export anything you want to keep before the end date, because the app locks the moment the membership lapses.
Can I extend my WHOOP membership instead of renewing?
WHOOP sells extensions and renewals through the membership page in the app and on its website. The price is the standard annual rate for your tier unless a promotion applies.
