Health trackers without a subscription.

You want the data without another monthly bill. Here is what actually works without a membership, what each option leaves out, and where Sixteen fits.

The wearable market drifted into memberships because hardware margins are thin and recurring revenue is not. That is a business reason, not a user reason. You can get sleep, heart rate, HRV and workouts without paying every month. What you cannot get for free is software that turns them into decisions, which is where a one time purchase makes sense.

Apple Health with Apple Watch

How to judge any of them

Does it need hardware you do not own?

A free app that needs a $300 ring is not free. Start from the device on your wrist.

What happens when you stop paying?

Ask whether the device keeps working, whether your history stays readable, and whether the free tier is real.

Does it change anything?

A score you look at and forget is a widget. Look for the thing the app does after it shows you the number.

Questions people ask

Is there a health tracking device that doesn't require a subscription?
Yes. Apple Watch, Garmin watches, Ultrahuman rings and the newer screenless bands such as Fitbit Air, Amazfit Helio Strap and Polar Loop 2 all work without a membership. What they lack is software that turns the data into a decision; Sixteen adds that for one payment and reads any of them through Apple Health, and a WHOOP strap directly.
What is the best WHOOP alternative without a subscription?
If you already own an Apple Watch or a WHOOP 4.0 strap, an app is the cheapest route: Sixteen scores either for $99 once. If you want new hardware, the screenless bands above avoid a membership but each ties you to its own app.
Is there a completely free health tracker?
Apple Health is free and, with an Apple Watch, stores sleep, heart rate and HRV. Garmin Connect is free with a Garmin watch. What they lack is a recovery model and coaching. Sixteen adds those for a one time price.
Which wearable has no subscription?
Apple Watch and Garmin watches work fully without one. Ultrahuman rings do not require a membership for core features. WHOOP is membership only and Oura needs a membership for most of its app.
Is a lifetime health app a good idea?
If the developer is honest about what is included and keeps shipping. Sixteen's lifetime plan covers the app and its updates. It never includes a wearable, because we do not sell one.
