Garmin alternative

Not a Garmin replacement. The rest of your health, around your Garmin.

Garmin Connect is free, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. What it does not do is log your meals, track your sets, or lock TikTok at bedtime. Sixteen does, using the sleep and heart data your Garmin already writes to Apple Health.

Why people use Garmin

Garmin owners are usually athletes first. Training load, VO2 max, structured workouts and a battery that lasts weeks. Garmin Connect is a serious training log and it costs nothing beyond the watch.

What Garmin does well

  • Deep training tools: training load, readiness, VO2 max estimates, structured workouts
  • Weeks of battery on many models
  • Maps, navigation and sport profiles for almost anything
  • A free app that does not gate your own data

Where Garmin Connect stops

It is not the price. Connect+ is optional at $6.99 a month or $69.99 a year and the free app keeps every existing feature. The gap is scope. Nutrition is handed off to third party apps. Strength logging on the watch is rep counting, not a progression log. Sleep and stress are reported, not acted on. And nothing in Garmin's world knows that you were on your phone until 1am.

Garmin Connect is free and keeps every existing feature free. Connect+ is an optional $6.99 a month or $69.99 a year for premium features such as AI insights and extra performance tools. Prices checked September 2026.

What Sixteen does differently

Recovery for the whole day

Sixteen's recovery score is capped by sleep, load and your journal and it sets the day's strain target and screen time. Body Battery tells you a number. Sixteen changes the plan.

Food and lifting in the same place

Log meals by search or photo and sets by weight and reps. Both feed recovery so a heavy leg day and a late dinner show up tomorrow.

Your Garmin data comes with you

Turn on Apple Health sync in Garmin Connect and sleep, heart rate and workouts flow into Sixteen. Keep Connect for training analysis.

The phone is part of recovery

A bedtime lock and earned screen time turn a good day of training into a good night of sleep.

  • Training analysis and structured workouts are what you care about.

  • You want your evening phone habit to be part of the plan.
  • You keep Garmin Connect for training and want the rest covered once.

Questions people ask

Is Garmin Connect+ worth it?
Connect+ is optional. Garmin Connect stays free with the watch and keeps Body Battery, sleep and training status on supported models. Connect+ adds AI summaries, a performance dashboard and some coaching. If what you want is a WHOOP style recovery number, food and screen time on the same phone, that is what Sixteen adds for one payment, with Garmin data arriving through Apple Health.
Can I get WHOOP style recovery on a Garmin?
Yes. Garmin writes sleep, heart rate and HRV to Apple Health when Health sync is on in Garmin Connect, and Sixteen scores recovery from those against your own baseline. A direct Garmin connection is on our roadmap.
Does Sixteen connect to Garmin directly?
Not yet. Today the path is Garmin Connect writing to Apple Health and Sixteen reading from it, which covers sleep, heart rate, workouts and steps. A direct connection is on the roadmap.
Is Garmin Connect+ worth it?
That depends on whether you want Garmin's AI insights and performance tools. Sixteen does not need Connect+ and does not replace it.
Can Sixteen replace Garmin Connect for training?
No. Sixteen logs activities with GPS and heart rate and computes strain, but Garmin Connect goes much deeper on training analysis. Use both.
