Oura Ring without a subscription: what you keep, what you lose

Without an Oura membership the app drops to three daily scores and hides the detail. What the ring still records, whether Apple Health sync continues, and how Sixteen turns that data into full sleep and recovery scores for one payment.

Updated 2026-09-16

Oura sells a ring and then a membership, and the membership is where the app lives. Let it lapse and the ring does not stop; the app just stops telling you much. Here is what is left, and how to get the full picture back without paying monthly.

What Oura leaves you without a membership

Oura’s own help centre spells it out: without a membership you keep three daily scores, Sleep, Readiness and Activity, as single numbers. Everything behind them is locked: the sleep stage breakdown, HRV and temperature trends, tags, the reports, and newer features as they arrive. The ring still records all of it. You just cannot see it.

What the ring keeps recording

Sleep, heart rate through the night, HRV, respiratory rate, temperature deviation and activity. The membership does not switch the sensor off. It switches the software off.

Getting the data out

The Oura app can write to Apple Health. That sync is a setting inside the app, not a membership feature, so it should continue after the membership lapses. Turn it on in the Oura app under Settings, Apple Health, and allow sleep, heart rate, HRV and workouts. Then any app that reads Apple Health can score it. One caveat we will not hide: Oura changes what is free from time to time. Confirm the sync on your ring before you rely on it.

Getting full scores back

Sixteen reads Apple Health and turns Oura’s data into a sleep score built on hours against your own need, consistency and efficiency, and a recovery score from HRV and resting heart rate against your own baseline. Then it adds what Oura does not have: nutrition, a strength log, GPS activities and screen time control that runs on the score. A direct Oura connection is on our roadmap; today the path is through Apple Health, and the Oura integration page lists exactly which metrics come across.

Price: $99 once or $19.99 a month. Not free, and a fraction of a yearly membership. The Oura alternative page has the five year maths.

If you do not own a ring yet

An Apple Watch worn overnight does the same job through Apple Health, with no membership at all. If you want a ring without a membership, Ultrahuman sells one; we compare it on the Ultrahuman page.

Questions people ask

Can you use an Oura Ring without a subscription?
Yes. Oura's help centre says the app keeps working without a membership, but only shows three daily scores: Sleep, Readiness and Activity. The detail behind them, trends, tags and the newer features are locked.
Is it worth having an Oura Ring without a subscription?
As a sensor, yes. The ring still records sleep, heart rate, HRV and temperature. As an app, no: three bare scores is not much. The useful move is to get the data into Apple Health and use an app that scores it fully.
Which Oura Ring has no subscription?
None of the current rings. Oura moved to a membership with Gen 3, and Gen 4 needs one for the full app. Ultrahuman is the ring brand that sells without a membership for core features.
Does Oura still sync to Apple Health without a membership?
The Apple Health sync is a setting in the Oura app rather than a membership feature, and the app keeps running without a membership, so it should keep writing sleep and heart data to Apple Health. Confirm it on your own ring before relying on it, because Oura changes what is free.
Can I get an Oura Ring for free?
No. The ring is a purchase and the membership is a separate monthly or yearly fee, with a first month free on new rings.
