WHOOP alternative

The WHOOP alternative that keeps your strap and drops the membership.

Sixteen is a WHOOP alternative app with no membership: it reads a WHOOP 4.0 strap directly over Bluetooth or an Apple Watch through Apple Health, scores sleep, recovery, HRV and strain on your phone, and adds nutrition, strength and screen time control for $99 once or $19.99 a month. WHOOP itself is $199 to $359 a year and the strap stops when you stop paying.

Why people use WHOOP

People buy WHOOP for one morning ritual: wake up, see a recovery percentage, know whether to push or rest. The strap is comfortable, the coaching is opinionated and the journal makes it easy to learn what alcohol or a late night costs. It is a good product, which is why the price stings.

What WHOOP does well

  • A comfortable screenless strap you forget you are wearing
  • Strain, recovery and sleep coaching built around a daily rhythm
  • A large journal for tagging behaviours against recovery
  • Multi day battery and on the go charging

Where WHOOP becomes expensive

Every WHOOP plan is a membership. The strap is included, and that is the catch: when the membership lapses, the strap stops. Over five years the cheapest tier is $995 and the top tier is $1,795, before any upgrade. The data you built lives in WHOOP's cloud, and none of it changes what your phone does at 11pm.

WHOOP sells three membership tiers at $199, $239 and $359 a year. The strap is included, and the app stops working when the membership ends. Prices checked September 2026.

What Sixteen does differently

Keep the strap, lose the bill

Sixteen reads a WHOOP strap over Bluetooth. Heart rate, HRV intervals and sleep come straight from the band, so a lapsed membership does not turn it into jewellery.

Or use the watch you already wear

Apple Watch owners get the same recovery, sleep and strain scores through Apple Health. No new hardware.

Nutrition and strength in the same app

Log meals by search or photo, log sets and reps, and let both feed your strain and recovery instead of living in a second and third app.

The score changes your day

Recovery sets the strain target. Strain and sleep earn screen time. Bedtime locks the apps that steal it. WHOOP tells you the number. Sixteen does something with it.

  • You want a screenless strap and never want to look at a watch.

Who should choose Sixteen

  • You already own an Apple Watch or a WHOOP strap.
  • You want recovery, food, lifting and screen time in one app.
  • You would rather pay $99 once than $199 or more every year.
  • You want the score to change what your phone does next.

Questions people ask

What are the best alternatives to the WHOOP app?
If you own an Apple Watch: an app that scores Apple Health data, such as Sixteen, Athlytic or Bevel. If you own a WHOOP strap: Sixteen reads it directly with no membership. If you want a new screenless band with no subscription: Fitbit Air, Amazfit Helio Strap, Polar Loop 2 and Garmin Cirqa are the ones people compare, and Noise REP in India. Sixteen is the software option; the others are hardware.
Is there a better band than WHOOP?
Better is the wrong question. Every optical band on the market is fine for trends and poor for peak effort. The real difference is the business model: WHOOP needs a membership, the newer screenless bands do not, and an Apple Watch you already own needs nothing but an app.
Is there a free version of WHOOP?
No. The WHOOP app is free to download and locked without a membership. There is no free tier. Sixteen is not free either, it is $99 once or $19.99 a month, but it never charges for the wearable.
Is there a WHOOP alternative in India?
Sixteen is on the App Store in India and works with an Apple Watch or a WHOOP 4.0 strap. If you want new hardware without a subscription, Noise REP is the India priced band people compare with WHOOP. Prices on this site are in USD; the App Store shows the local price.
Does Sixteen work with WHOOP 5.0 or WHOOP MG?
Not yet. WHOOP 4.0 is what we test on and the newer straps use a different radio protocol. We will list them as supported only after verifying them on real hardware.
Is Sixteen a free WHOOP alternative?
Sixteen is not free. It is $99 once for life or $19.99 a month. What it removes is the wearable membership: no WHOOP plan is needed to use a WHOOP strap with Sixteen, and Apple Watch owners need nothing extra.
Can I use WHOOP without a subscription?
The WHOOP app locks without a membership. The strap still broadcasts heart rate and intervals over Bluetooth, and Sixteen reads that directly, so with Sixteen the strap keeps giving you sleep, HRV, recovery and strain.
Is Sixteen more accurate than WHOOP?
We do not claim that. Both use the same overnight signals. Sixteen's method is published on the Science page so you can judge it. The difference we do claim is what happens after the score.
Does Sixteen have a strap of its own?
No, and that is the point. Sixteen is software for the sensor you already own. We never plan to sell you a second device.
What about WHOOP's journal?
Sixteen has a journal too. Tag alcohol, caffeine, late meals, screens in bed and more, and see how each moves your recovery over time.
Can I use WHOOP without paying?
Not through the WHOOP app, which stops showing new data when the membership ends. The strap keeps recording, and Sixteen reads a WHOOP 4.0 directly over Bluetooth with no WHOOP account, so a lapsed strap keeps scoring your sleep, recovery and strain. Steps are in our guide to using WHOOP without a subscription.
What is the best WHOOP alternative app?
It depends on what you own. If you have an Apple Watch, Sixteen turns it into a recovery and sleep tracker through Apple Health with no membership. If you have a WHOOP strap, Sixteen reads it directly. If you want WHOOP's own coaching, blood oxygen and skin temperature, the WHOOP membership is the only way to get those.
