How to cancel a WHOOP membership, and what to do with the strap

Where the cancel button is, what WHOOP's commitment terms mean for refunds, when to cancel so you are not charged for another year, and how to keep the strap working after.

WHOOP makes cancelling possible, not obvious. This guide is the short version: where to click, what the terms mean for your money, and what to do with the strap once you are out.

Where to cancel

  1. Sign in at WHOOP’s website, not the app. The app shows your membership but the management options live on the web.
  2. Open Membership. You will see your tier, the renewal date and the remaining commitment.
  3. Choose the cancel or auto renewal option. WHOOP’s help centre also lists an email route if the option is missing.
  4. Take a screenshot of the confirmation. Renewals are automatic and the renewal date is the date that matters.

WHOOP updates its flow and its terms often. If what you see does not match this, the help centre article on managing your membership is the current source.

The commitment period

WHOOP memberships are sold as 12 or 24 month commitments, sometimes with a monthly payment option. Cancelling inside the commitment does not end the payments; it stops the next renewal. That is the part people are surprised by, and it is why the r/whoop threads about cancelling are long. The clean exit is to cancel auto renewal now and let the term run out.

Refunds

Inside the trial window, usually 30 days, you can return the strap for a refund under WHOOP’s trial terms. After that, memberships are generally non refundable and run to the end of the paid term. Check the current returns page before you rely on this, because it changes.

What to do with the strap

You keep it. WHOOP does not take the strap back after the trial window, and it keeps working as a sensor. Two options:

  • Sell it. Second hand straps sell, and buyers often ask whether it works without a membership. Point them here.
  • Keep it and read it directly. Sixteen pairs with a WHOOP 4.0 over Bluetooth and scores sleep, recovery, HRV and strain on your phone, with no WHOOP account. $99 once or $19.99 a month, no membership for the strap. Setup is in how to use WHOOP without a subscription.

Before you cancel

  • Export your data from the app while it still opens.
  • Cancel auto renewal even if you are undecided. You can always rejoin; you cannot undo a renewal charge.
  • If your strap is a 5.0 or MG, know that Sixteen does not support it yet. WHOOP 4.0 is what we test on.

Questions people ask

How do I cancel my WHOOP membership?
Sign in on WHOOP's website, open Membership, and choose the option to cancel or turn off auto renewal. WHOOP's help centre also lists an email route. Do it before the renewal date shown on that page, because renewals are charged automatically.
Is it difficult to cancel a WHOOP membership?
The button exists, but memberships carry a commitment period. If you cancel inside it you may be asked to pay out the remaining months or keep the membership until it ends. Cancelling at the end of a term is straightforward.
Do I get a refund if I cancel my WHOOP membership?
Inside the first 30 days WHOOP's trial terms allow a return of the strap for a refund. After that, memberships are generally non refundable and run to the end of the paid term. Check the current policy on WHOOP's site, which changes.
What happens after 12 months of WHOOP?
The membership renews automatically for another term unless you cancelled before the date. If it lapses, the app locks and the strap keeps recording. It can still be used with an app that reads it directly.
Can I keep the strap after cancelling?
Yes. The strap is yours. WHOOP does not ask for it back after a trial return window, and it keeps working as a Bluetooth sensor with an app such as Sixteen.
