Is there a free WHOOP app?

The WHOOP app is free to download and useless without a paid membership. What you can do with a WHOOP strap and no membership, which apps read it, and an honest look at what each one costs.

Searching for a free WHOOP app usually means one of two things. Either you have a strap and the membership has ended, or you are deciding whether to buy in and want to know what the bill really is. Here is the plain answer to both.

The WHOOP app is free to download and paid to use

The official WHOOP app costs nothing on the App Store or Google Play. It also does nothing without a membership. Every recovery, sleep and strain number sits behind the subscription, which is $199, $239 or $359 a year depending on the tier. The strap is included in that price, which is why WHOOP can say the hardware is free. Cancel, and the app stops updating.

So: there is no free WHOOP app in the sense of a free way to use WHOOP.

What a strap can do without WHOOP

The strap is a Bluetooth sensor. It keeps recording heart rate and the intervals between beats whether or not you pay. What you need is another app that can pair with it and score that data. We wrote up the whole process, including what you lose, in how to use a WHOOP strap without a subscription.

Your options, honestly:

  • Open source community projects. People on r/whoop have built apps that read the strap directly. They are free, they are unfinished, and you maintain them yourself.
  • Sixteen. A finished app that pairs with a WHOOP 4.0 directly, scores sleep, recovery, HRV and strain on your phone, and adds nutrition, a strength log and screen time control. It is not free. It is $99 once, or $19.99 a month, and there is no membership for the strap.
  • Keep WHOOP. If you want WHOOP’s coaching, journal, blood oxygen and skin temperature, the membership is the only way to get them.

What “free” costs over five years

Year one Five years What you keep after
WHOOP One to Life $199 to $359 $995 to $1,795 A strap that stops working
Strap you own + Sixteen lifetime $99 $99 Everything
Strap you own + Sixteen monthly $239.88 $1,199.40 Nothing once you cancel

The honest version

If you own a strap and mostly want the morning recovery number, you do not need to pay WHOOP again. If you do not own one yet, an Apple Watch does the same job through Apple Health, and Sixteen reads either. Neither route is free. Both are a fraction of a membership.

Questions people ask

Is the WHOOP app free?
It is free to download from the App Store and Google Play, but it only works with an active WHOOP membership. Without one it shows no new data. There is no free tier of WHOOP.
Can I get WHOOP for free?
WHOOP sometimes offers a first month free with a new membership, and the strap ships as part of that membership. After the trial the membership is $199 to $359 a year. There is no way to keep using the WHOOP app for free.
Is WHOOP really free?
No. The strap is included with the membership, which is why it looks free. Stop paying and the app stops working, and the strap only keeps going if another app reads it.
Is Sixteen a free WHOOP app?
No. Sixteen is $99 once for lifetime access or $19.99 a month. It removes the wearable membership, not the cost of the app. What it gives you is a WHOOP strap or Apple Watch that keeps working, plus nutrition, strength and screen time control in the same app.
