Apps like WHOOP for Apple Watch: how to get recovery, strain and sleep scores

Yes, an Apple Watch can do the WHOOP job. Which apps give you a recovery score, strain and sleep from Apple Health, what the watch measures well, what it cannot, and how Sixteen compares with Athlytic and Bevel.

The thing people actually want from WHOOP is the morning: a recovery number, a strain target, and a sleep score. An Apple Watch already records everything needed to compute those. It just does not compute them. That is the gap these apps fill.

What the watch gives you

Worn overnight, an Apple Watch writes to Apple Health: sleep stages, heart rate through the night, HRV samples, resting heart rate, respiratory rate on Series 8 and later, and every workout you record. Wrist temperature is stored too on recent models. None of this needs a subscription. Apple Health is free and lives on your phone.

What the watch does not do

There is no recovery or readiness score in Apple’s Health app, no strain score, and no sleep score with a target that moves with your need. The Vitals app on watchOS flags when metrics are out of range, which is useful, but it is not a daily readiness number. So the watch is a very good sensor with no coach attached.

The apps that add the WHOOP layer

  • Sixteen. Reads Apple Health, scores sleep against your own need, recovery from HRV and resting heart rate against your baseline, and day strain from heart rate zones plus what you lift. Then it does something with the number: recovery sets the strain target, and sleep and strain earn screen time while bedtime locks the apps that steal it. Also reads a WHOOP strap directly if you have one. $99 once or $19.99 a month.
  • Athlytic. The closest recreation of WHOOP’s screens on Apple Watch, with recovery, exertion and sleep. Well liked on r/AppleWatch. Subscription with a trial.
  • Bevel. Recovery plus an AI coach and nutrition, with a strong Apple Watch complication. Subscription.

We name them because people ask, and because the honest answer is that all three do the score. The difference is what happens after it.

Three things to know before you switch

  1. Wear it to bed. No overnight data, no recovery score. A lot of “the app is broken” posts are a watch on a charger.
  2. HRV is sampled, not continuous. Apple Watch takes short HRV readings through the night. That makes single nights noisier than a strap. Every app on this list compares you to your own baseline, which is where the value is.
  3. Battery. Apple Watch needs a daily charge. A strap lasts days. If you hate charging, that is a real reason to keep a WHOOP.

If you also own a WHOOP strap

You do not have to choose. Sixteen reads both: Apple Watch through Apple Health and a WHOOP 4.0 directly over Bluetooth, and it scores from whichever has the better night. See using WHOOP without a subscription.

Questions people ask

Can I use my Apple Watch like a WHOOP?
Yes, with an app. Apple Watch records heart rate, HRV, sleep and workouts into Apple Health. An app that reads Apple Health can turn those into a recovery score, a strain score and a sleep score, which is what WHOOP shows. Sixteen, Athlytic and Bevel all do this.
Is there a WHOOP app for Apple Watch?
WHOOP does not make one. WHOOP's app only works with a WHOOP strap and membership. The apps that give an Apple Watch WHOOP style scores are third party apps that read Apple Health.
What is the best WHOOP alternative app for Apple Watch?
It depends on what you want after the score. Athlytic is the closest copy of WHOOP's screens. Bevel adds coaching and nutrition. Sixteen adds nutrition, a strength log and screen time control that runs on your recovery, and it also reads a WHOOP strap directly. All three are one time or low cost purchases with no wearable membership.
Do I need to wear the Apple Watch to bed?
Yes. Recovery and sleep scores come from overnight heart rate and HRV, so the watch has to be on your wrist at night. Charge it during a shower or in the evening.
Is Apple Watch HRV as accurate as WHOOP?
We do not make accuracy claims against other brands. Apple Watch samples HRV in short windows rather than continuously, so nightly values are noisier than a strap that records every beat. Against your own baseline, which is how Sixteen scores it, the trend is what matters.
